”CulturalBridges2016” at Heart of Denmark

When Danes travel abroad to explore new destinations, we always bring our traditions in meeting new cultures and creating of new relations. This also applies when the 2016 Olympics kicks off in August in Rio de Janeiro. And for that reason the International Culture Panel – via the Agency for Culture and Palaces, Danish Architecture Center, Danish Cultural Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, VisitDenmark and Danish Cyclists’ Federation – has prepared the cultural program CulturalBridges2016.

CulturalBridges2016 is a versatile project cooperation that runs parallel to the world event RI02016 with the purpose of sharing Danish culture and strengthen the cultural exchange between Brazil and Denmark.

CulturalBridges2016 will partly take place at the beautiful Danish pavilion, Heart of Denmark, designed by the acclaimed Henning Larsen Architects and developed primarily by VisitDenmark – surrounded by palm trees, the Brazilian sun and ocean waves at the world-famous Ipanema Beach.

The culture venture is based on the strong Danish tradition of giving culture a vital part in our society, which i.a. builds on well reputed design, sustainability and lifestyle. The intention of the Danish-Brazilian cultural exhange effort across national borders is to build bridges through mutual communication.

CulturalBridges2016 embraces the Brazilian passion for music and uses music as a universal language in its cultural influence. Therefore, Danes, locals and people from all around the world can look forward to enjoying the spectacular sunsets over Ipanema’s golden sandy beach and watch the ferocity of the sea to the sound of Danish DJ’s and producers who, as a central part of

CulturalBridges2016 brings the party to the sunset sessions each day between 17-19 during the 20 opening days of the pavilion. Every Friday and Saturday evening CulturalBridges2016 offers concerts with a wide range of musicgenres of renowned artists, such as jazz musician Jakob Bro, folk/classical duo Wenzell & Bugge and the Danish pop band Panamah, which since 2010 has solidated their name on the Danish music scene with the hit “Ikke for sent” and in 2013 they had their first hit ever on Brazilian radio, sung in Danish.

Furthermore what is more Danish than our world renowned cycling culture? Following on the pavilion’s bike focus, in collaboration with the Cyclists’ Federation the Danish Cultural Institute presents “the Danish way of living” through the activity “Bike Games” on Praça Tiradentes in the center of Rio de Janeiro, on the 12th of august.

At “Bike Games” children from the age of 2 get to experience the Danish cycling passion through play and games. In addition, throughout August the Danish Cultural Institute presents, in cooperation with Centro Carioca de Design (CCD), the exhibition “Architecture with People” and “Copenhagen Solutions” that shows the Danish bid for plausible solutions to future sustainability, urban development and transportation challenges. These issues will aslo be the themes on August 13, when the Danish Cultural Institute’s seminar “Copenhagen X Rio de Janeiro – A Dialogue Between 2 Cities on the Move” is conducted at CCD with the participation of Danish and Brazilian politicians and experts.

The International Culture Panel, partners and sponsors hope that Danes, locals and visiting audiences will stop by CulturalBridges2016‘ great cultural events and leave a greeting on our interactive Together Wall, a permanent exhibition at the Danish pavilion, which will tell the whole world “what we can do together”. The wall emphasizes theseven themes of the pavilion, “live together, commute together, eat together, play together, innovate together, design together and recycle together”.

We look forward to seeing you!
